The study load for students is minimum 36 credits (65.81 ECTS) and maximum of 50 credits (83.32 ECTS). The duration of the program is expected to be fulfilled in 4 (four) semesters and can be completed in less than 4 (four) semesters and for a maximum of 10 (ten) semesters including lectures and thesis. In each semester, there are compulsory and elective courses. In odd semesters there are four compulsory courses and seven elective courses. While in the even semester, there are three compulsory courses and six elective courses. The curriculum in 3rd and 4th semester are designed to focus in the thesis research (Table 1). All courses were developed to fulfil the ILO including attitude, knowledge, general skills, and specific skills.
The courses offered to students each semester:
- Semester 1: 9 credits of compulsory subjects and 3 credits of elective courses
- Semester 2: 7 credits of compulsory subjects and 5 credits of elective courses
- Semester 3-4: 12 credits of thesis

Evaluation of the teaching and learning activities is conducted regularly at the end of each semester. The course team teaching conducts a coordination meeting before the semester starts. The teaching materials is reviewed regularly, and necessary revision is conducted based on the input from the team.
Formulating the ILO, MAE considers the competency are required by stakeholders. Stakeholder had several suggestions are used as a reference for evaluating or updating the curriculum by improving the course material. MAE arranging and redesigning the curriculum structure, such as:
- Companies as users of graduates (PT Pupuk Indonesia, Sampoerna Agro, Astra Agro Lestari Tbk., SMART Tbk., PT. Syngenta Indonesia, PT.Great Giant Pineapple) suggest that MAE should strengthen the analysis skills, modeling analysis in soil and water management systems, spatial analysis (GIS and remote sensing), knowledge of soil fertility management, organic and bio-fertilizer technology, and management system of sustainable agriculture.
- Watershed Management Research Institute recommends that the graduates be good at the catchment area’s hydrology management system, healthy watershed management, and spatial analysis related to hydrology.
- Government companies (PERHUTANI and PT. Perkebunan Nusantara) suggest that graduates should be good at managerial skill, communication and ability of foreign language skill in particularly at field society, as well as on spatial mapping and modeling
The evaluation process is conducted not only for the teaching and learning activities but also for the curriculum. Workshops and scientific meetings were arranged yearly to evaluate the curriculum. Workshops are held at the department level involving the entire academic communities. Updating the curriculum is a form of a critical and analytical attitude of the Postgraduate Program of the Faculty of Agriculture (PPs FA-UB) in responding to scientific developments in the field of agriculture, applicable legal policies, and the needs or requests of graduate users (stakeholders).
MAE lecture study materials have been systematically arranged to provide students with a traceable understanding of agricultural entomology. The curriculum was designed in such way that there is correlation in each course, both compulsory and elective courses. For example, the comprehensive knowledges about insect were taught in several courses such as insect ecology, insect behavior, and insect physiology. All these courses were served as a basis for comprehension in Biological Control and Integrated Pest and Diseases Management. The practical course is given in several courses which has objective for mastery of knowledge from the cognitive and psychomotor aspect. The study materials and assignment
were designed to support the students’ skills in conducting research for their final project.
In their obligation to carry out the research, the lecturers in MAE program always involves students in the implementation. Research results are published by involving students as authors or co-authors. The results of research conducted by students and lecturers were used to update learning materials in study programs. One of the courses that its lecture material is regularly updated from the research result is Tropical Agroecosystem Biodiversity. MAE also supports students in improving their knowledge and experience by participating in the international seminar or short-course overseas. For instance, one of the MAE’s students did a two-week short course at Jiangxi Agriculture University, Nanchang,
China in 2019. The short course was themed on the molecular identification of insects.
